Fort William
Former military base built in the 17th century by the English to protect the city’s trading post. Inside was a famous dungeon known as Kolkata’s “Black Hole” where, according to legend, hundreds of prisoners of war from the Empire died in overcrowding. The dungeon disappeared with the destruction of the original Fort William, but the new Fort built in its place can be visited in the old Dalhouise square; in it, specifically in a passageway near the post office, they say that the guard room is still located.
